GYSO Audition Requirements

General Guidelines

  • Grade 7-8 Royal Conservatory of Music (RCM) level, or similar

  • Strings - Knowledge of scales from keys up to and including four sharps and four flats.

  • Winds/Brass/Percussion - Knowledge of scales from keys up to and including five sharps and five flats. *Clarinet, Trumpet, and Horn players can expect to encounter transposing!

  • After one year in GYSO, students are expected to know all major and minor keys/scales (in the octaves appropriate to your instrument).

Audition Requirements

For all instruments (mid year submission 19/20):

  • One Étude or Exposition from a solo concerto/sonata

  • Two contrasting orchestral excerpts (please email if you need guidance with excerpts)

  • Perform major and minor scales, in two octaves as appropriate for your instrument, in EM/c#m and BM/g#m (not transposed! - these keys for you)
